Baker & O'Brien Presents at the 2014 Argus North American Crude Transportation Summit (Houston)
Where SHOULD my crude go? How refiners value your crude
June 3, 2014
Charles Kemp recently presented an overview of the decisions that refiners make when choosing crude oils to process. Growth in domestic crude production is providing refiners new choices and power to negotiate. Producers need to understand a target refinery’s options, constraints, and relative inflexibility to process crude oils that are different than its typical slate. Mr. Kemp’s presentation discussed how medium crude imports will continue to be replaced by light crudes but with less volume than the displaced crude. Due to the associated throughput losses, yields, and operating costs that differ between refineries, breakeven values can vary by several dollars per barrel.
